After the Great War, the Pandavas honored the dead and conducted the necessary rites in order to aid the souls of the dead into Moksha. However, when they attempted it in several sites suitable for the process, they were not able to get anything done. Desperate for any kind of answer, the Pandavas went to Bharthaghandam, an auspicious place, guided by their revered guru Vedavyasa.
They lived there, performed all rituals, and in the end felt very happy after realizing that all the dead warriors reached Moksha and achieved everlasting peace. This temple was built by them because they felt the presence of their Maha Guru Srikrishna everywhere around them, and since they had made and lived in this place, it was called as Ivar madam. It is also said that Veda Vyasa supervised the construction of Ivor Madom temple on the banks of Nila river (Bharatha Puzha). The main god Lord Krishna has several updevas with him in this temple like Lord Shiva, Ganapathy, Ayyapa, Mahalakshmi, and Naga.
